Isobel had three tantrums before 8 a.m..
She had another when we got home from preschool, resulting in immediate nappage.
Which didn't happen.
She tore the curtains off the windows.
She ripped a book.
I baked a cake because it's Olivia's birthday.
Flipped cooked cake out of pan onto plate where it promptly split in two.
Was late picking Olivia up from school.
Got home and Isobel darted to the kitchen and grabbed a HUGE hunk out of the non-wrecked half of cake.
Olivia's asshole father, who hasn't spoken to her in 5 months and hasn't seen her in nearly two years, called to say happy birthday, which made Olivia lose it. She doesn't want to talk to him at all and I'm going to have to tell him that when he calls back.
Olivia's friends all backed out of her sleepover - one has a wedding, one's parents won't let her come and the other got a last-minute babysitting gig. She's not a happy girl right now.
It's only 4 p.m. and I'm already exhausted.

It's only just after 4 here - no beer until they are in bed.
Thank god I have therapy shortly. She's going to earn her money tonight.

Hah. They need to send that pelican here. Pigeons are infesting a neighbors house. It doesn't help that she leaves food out for the damned things. Rats with wings. Horrible birds.

What sort of therapy do you do?
Tantrum days are a nightmare. With my 3 year old daughter, when she gets tired, the tantrums happen. The rest of the time she's in good spirits and fun to be with. Reminds me of the poem:
There was a little girl
Who had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forehead
When she was good
She was very very good
And when she was bad
She was horrid
It's very true :-)
When she gets into an over-tired state during the day, I stick her in the car and drive until she falls asleep. She wakes up a new person. At night time, it's harder. There's been nights I've just given up trying to get her to bed and called my mother to come up and take over. A bath sometimes helps. Thankfully it doesn't get that bad too often...
Good luck!
Can you buy a replacement sugar-free cake? Can you plan an alternative night for the sleepover? How old is Olivia now?

Was getting worried there for a sec, until you mentioned the neighbours house.
Anyway...if you wait here long enough the one from the video might turn up.

It's just talk therapy - I don't know that it has a type. I never asked... But she's great and helps a lot (along with the happy pills).
Olivia is 14. And we don't do sugar-free because the stuff they substitute for sugar is disgusting and gives you the trots. Not pleasant. She just boluses for cake or treats.
We decided to go to the movies and to dinner, just the two of us. It will be nice. I hope.
The two monsters will be fed, bathed and put to bed early tonight, come hell or high water.

Have you got somewhere in the house that has nothing in it that would entertain a child or that she could break? Bedrooms have toys and other things that can be destroyed in a temper. A specific time-out place with nothing entertaining in it might help in calming a tantrum as there's nothing to keep the momentum going, certainly not a parent paying attention of any kind other than making it clear that actions have consequences. Good behaviour results in loving attention and praise, bad behaviour results in removal from anything that might be fun.

Some time alone together works wonders I find, hope you both have a great time.

Happy Birthday Olivia! Mother and daughter dinner and movie sounds good. Away from the little uns and the phone...!! Enjoy, you both deserve it.
oh and maybe make Isobel wear the cake? Olivia could throw it at her, she's allowed under the big sister rules, section: it's my birthday.

Journey To The Center Of The Earth. Her choice, obviously. I tried to talk her into Ghost Town but no dice. Since it's her birthday, I figured she could get her way. Besides, it has Brendan Fraser, hot and sweaty, so it can't be all bad.
