Jaguar have told Williams that they are prepared to make a multi-million pound bid for Jenson Button to drive for them from 2003.
Button, who is under a long-term contract with Williams, is currently at Benetton where the 21-year-old is having a disastrous season having failed to score a single point all season.
But it’s thought that Jaguar still regard Button as a future world champion and are keen to sign the Brit as a replacement for Eddie Irvine, whose contract runs out in 2003.
The European Grand Prix paddock was buzzing with speculation that Button could be on his way out of Benetton at the end of the year after his disappointing season with the Renault-owned team.
While his immediate future is the subject of rumour Jaguar have told team boss Frank Williams they definitely want the youngster from 2003 onwards.
Button is contracted to Benetton until the end of 2002 but after that he returns to BMW-Williams for 2003 and they have first call on his services.
But they also have Juan Pablo Montoya under contract and may decide to retain him for another year. That would leave Jaguar and Jordan battling over Button’s services. Jordan’s title sponsors Benson and Hedges want to see a Brit in their cars.
