Can anyone recommend a decent book on SQL, covering all the standards as well as focusing on MS SQL Server & My SQL for me please?

A short-list, a good place to start (I've not read them all!).

It really depends on what level you are looking at - I could suggest a beginners book but that might not be what you are after.

I don't think the quiz is a good indicator.

Almost! Study a little more and take the test again!

I have never programmed a single line of sql. Any knowledge I have is theory from over 10 years ago, so treat results with a pinch of salt.

AAAAAAAAAAAA this thread is giving me trauma. I've been writing stored procedures for the last hour. I've even been fucking DREAMING stored procedures recently.

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Bible by Paul Nielsen, published by Wiley. My boss uses it and my boss is Teh Whizz at SQL Server. The T-SQL help in SQL Server Query Analyzer is also pretty good.

I've done this loads of times before but my brain is not coming up with the goods this morning.

I'm trying to extract the first few digits of a serial number (as in first 4 of 10, and up to the first '-'), anyone know what SQL will do this for me?

I'm such a nerd. I laughed out loud (yes actually lol) at this thread. Good ideas too. Thanks.

For MSSQL you would use the SUBSTRING and CHARINDEX functions, for Oracle you would use SUBSTR and INSTR functions.
