I got one of those Aldi CD/MP3 car stereos yesterday. My problem is that I need to remove the old stereo. It's one of those yokes with the four holes into which you have insert those little U-shaped tools. Naturally, I don't have the requisite tools. Are they readily available? Or can anyone suggest a workaround. The old stereo will be going in the bin so I don't care if I damage it.

Leave the car on Sean McDermott Street with the windows open.

You need to know what make the current radio is. Then, try eBay.

You would usually get those tools with a new stereo, if the stereo used them, but the Aldi yoke obviously doesn't. Ask in any car stereo fitters for a loan of a pair, 2 minutes or less will have the old one out. These guys usually have a few spare ones lying around anyway - the more "back street" the more likely they are to be helpful. If you're lucky the block connector on the current one will fit the Aldi one and it's all done in minutes.

Blaupunkt.
No doubt she's a Germanian car, possibly a V Doublye.
If they are 4 circular holes you can rig together a coat hanger cutting two pieces into a U shape that you can slot into the holes. There's basically release clips that need to be pressed at the same time to release the radio from the cage it's into on the dash. You can also buy these tools for around €5 from Halfords or any decent car accessory shop but making the tool yourself is half the fun :)

It's actually a Mazda, Mac. I was thinking of having a go with a coat hanger alright, although I think I remember that not working for me before. If that fails I'll try one of the other options.
Thanks all.

Yes it's just a case of all release clips being open at the same time and it should slide out, then connecting it up is easy enough provided the cabling and connectors at the back are standard. I had a problem when fitting mine in that the aerial cable from my car fitted fine into the Blaupunkt but when I tried it with my new one the connector needed to be female instead of male, I got the connector to change this from a car acessory show for a couple of quid and all worked fine.

When I was replacing the one on my dads car I just went into a main dealer (rover; philips stereo) and they gave me a set for free!
But a welding rod or a coat hanger can be used just as effectively!

The hanger worked a treat. Unfortunately, the connectors aren't compatible so it looks like I'll have to pay someone to do it after all.

It's not too tricky, if you can figure out which wires are left/front, right/front. left/rear etc and then live, aerial (an obvious one!) you can chage the block on the back of the unit to match the one on the car. As long as you don't don't do something silly with the 'live' it's trial and error after that - they should all be clearly marked.

Try a motor accessories shop, they sell adaptors for most setups, might be looking at €10-15.

Jaysus! And I thought I was an absolute genius for thinking to use a coat hanger!!!
If you buy a system from Halford's they'll install the player for you, BUT only if it's a simple connect up job.
