The foundation run by Microsoft magnate Bill Gates has announced it is dedicating $750m (£400m) to a worldwide infant vaccination programme. Mr Gates said the donation would help save millions of children's lives.
"Supporting children's immunisation is undoubtedly the best investment we've ever made," he said in a statement. At the same time, it was announced that Norway was donating $290m to the same organisation, the Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunisation (Gavi).
Mr Gates has made a name as one of the world's top philanthropists. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged $7bn to good causes over the last decade.
The Microsoft founder is expected to press the case for further investment in disease prevention at this week's annual World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
He is due to share a platform with Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair for a debate on healthcare funding. On Tuesday he appealed to other donors to help fund Gavi's goal - to immunise all the world's children.

So essentially, if you pirate MS software you're killing babies.
Actually this is one part of BG I've long admired.

He's going to harvest their souls to make a magic computer for his cloud palace.

I see your point , by ensuring that more people live he is doubtless causing overpopulation problems.
All part of his masterplan to ensure a steady supply of sacrificial offerings to Baal.
Vaccintating children is EVIL !
You need to watch this guy ....
Click on financials , grants paid here (http://www.gatesfoundation.org/nr/public/media/annualreports/annualreport03/flash/Gates_AR-2003.html) , he's funding libraries too ! Probably so he can put a sticker in each one:
The existence of other operating system software is a theory and not a fact.
Please read any reference to them with scepticism and a closed mind.

I have a tremendous admiration for the man for his charitable donations. Also that he's being very careful about how much he leaves his children. He's not leaving them everything, apparently. Enough to be very comfortable, but not to be obscenely rich. I believe the majority of the personal fortune goes to charity on his and his wife's deaths.

10 million a piece to the kiddiwinks , and administered via a fund with oversight on spending.
Nice piece of change but nothing nearly as obscene as it could have been.
I applaud that move too.

i'd love to see someone put shedloads of cash into free contraception schemes all over the world. might take a philanthropist cos it's a bit of a political hot potato, and a lot of governments don't want to touch it.

the $750,000,000 Gates....or the $21,000,000 gates. One a generous individual who gives in unheard of amounts, and another who wastes money on .... oh hell, I've already been roundly criticized on that complaint. I'll take Bills "Gates" any day. Beats the hell out of that waste in Central park. I hate microsoft, but give the man his due. I admire his generosity and dedication to worthy causes. I would imagine that his singular contribution to this cause exceeds that of any government, or for that matter large groups of governments.

Bu the thing to remember is, there is probably no opportunity cost in Gates' donation.
He didn't have to sacrifice anything so he could make the donation. 'Hmm, Should I buy every ferrarri ever built, or should i Give some money to charity'
I think the people who donated a few hundred or a thousand euro to the tsunami relief deserve just as much credit as Gates does, even if the real effect of their generosity isn't to save millions of lives

so true MB. A lot better on a precentage of his wealth, I would think, than any of those overpaid athletes and glorified movie and rock stars. This is far from the first of his many serious financial contributions. Yes, he lives in a house that cost some astronomical sum, like $40,000,000 if I recall, but at least he shares a huge portion of what he has and makes a serious contribution to the the betterment of life in the third world. .
