a crock pot, drifter, is a pot, genrally connected to an electrical type socket where you stew, well, stews, and soups. It's great for all day cooking so to speak. Put some meat and stock in the crock pot before you go to work and then by the time you get home, dinner is ready. :)

I like the idea of my dinner cooking away while I'm in work. Nothing worse than coming home knackered and hungry after work and having to cook a meal.

You can't cook a hell of a lot in a crock pot, though. Stews and soups, mainly. Although you could probably do chicken cacciatore or spaghetti sauce, too. It's the prep time that gets me. I don't want to have to prep a meal the night before, after I've just cooked a meal, in order to put it in the crock pot the next morning. But they are good for weekends. that's mostly when I use mine.
Oooh, speaking of which, maybe I'll make some soup this weekend in the crock pot. Beef stew with dumplings. Mmm.
Damn. Now I'm hungry again.

Sounds like it would really suit dishes like Beef Stroganoff and Hungarian Goulash. Yum!

Oh yeah, I forgot about those. The crazy people I live with don't tend to like stuff like that. They need smacking, all of 'em.

I guess you could do a lovley curry in a crockpot. There are some authentic dishes that are cooked in India over 12 hours or more. MMmmmmmmm... curry!

Hungarian Goulash from Allrecipes.com
Ingredients:
2 pounds beef chuck roast, cubed
1 large onion, diced
1/2 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons Hungarian sweet paprika
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1 1/4 cups water, divided
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 Place beef in slow cooker, and cover with onion. In a medium bowl, stir together ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, salt, paprika, mustard, and 1 cup water. Pour mixture over beef and onions.
2 Cover, and cook on Low for 9 to 10 hours, or until meat is tender.
3 Mix 1/4 cup water with flour to form a paste, and stir into goulash. Cook on High for 10 to 15 minutes, or until sauce thickens.
That's it.

Hey, I could make that. I have all that stuff in my cupboard. I even have tomato puree instead of ketchup. Cool.

Then there was the flatmate from hell who used to eat mince. Just minced beef, cooked in a pan and served up on a plate. He wouldn't eat any of my "weird stuff".

eugh! He would also top it off with beans if we were really unlucky.
I should start a thread all about him. He was really a flatmake from hell, what with the loud wanking and all. :(

that goulash sounds great. I've had two crock pots for approximately 4 years and have never used either one. perhaps I'll become a cooker! (chef would be way too fancy a title for me)
btw, is mince just ground beef? plain ground beef wouldn't be terrible. not exciting but sometimes you just eat to get food in your belly and you don't want to waste time for ingredients. er, I'm probably just speaking for myself around here, eh?
