Not bad.

In line with the previous H&D game it comes out of the box buggy and annoying. However once you have applied the patch things improve somewhat. Be prepared for a long download though as it's 23mb. Thank God for broadband!

This is a game that rewards patience and tactics. Charging into a room full of Nazis WILL get you killed. This is a game where you are human not some über-Schwarzenegger, bullets kill and do so quickly. This is something the Return to Castle Wolfenstein set will find immensely frustrating as sometimes you won't be able to resist the urge to run out all guns blazing. Then you die.

The controls are a pain out of the box because they assume you want to use the number pad on the right of the keyboard. All the keys have to be mapped and re-assigning them is a major task, however this is alleviated a little by the patch which gives you the option of well worked out WASD control set.

The graphics are never going to knock you off your seat in the same way that Max Payne 2 does but they are smooth, detailed and run pretty well even on a fairly basic system like mine (1Ghz AMD, 128MB Ram, GeForce FX 5200). One of the big plus points is the physics engine which like Max Payne 2, allows for some very satisfying kills. A trooper sits at a desk, you lean around the corner, a rifle in hand then BANG a single bullet rips his head back knocking from the chair leaving him in a heap on the floor. Nice.

Sound is also important in this game. Both you and the enemy can hear what is going on so stealth is a major part of success. That’ll be the ‘hidden’ part of the title you see. The sounds are all there, footsteps, bolt actions on rifles, speech. It’s all very impressive and used to good effect.

I could go on for ages but frankly I’m supposed to be working so I won’t.

I’ve yet to get into this game full so my opinion may change but right now I reckon its worth a mark of 85% (though if you don’t get the patch then that should be 70% - it really does make that much of a difference).
