THE planned Metro link between the city centre and Dublin Airport may be up and running in 2005 two years earlier than scheduled.
Transport Minister Seamus Brennan is also setting his sights on the introduction of new high-speed inter-city trains on routes such as Dublin to Cork, Limerick and Sligo.
Such initiatives, he believes, will help ease traffic congestion by taking more cars off the roads.
"My aim is to provide the public with a clean, efficient, reliable service on our bus and rail network," said Mr Brennan who has taken over the new integrated Transport Department which has responsibility for road, railways and aviation.

I can't see such a thing working in cork - Cork airport is on the top of a hill and as far as I know, a train wouldn't suit such a terrain, but hey, what do I know...

Until the taxis go on strike coz 'their' business will be taken away, and Hackneys go on strike coz they want to use the tram lines.

This link is SO badly needed. We're the laughing stock of Europe when it comes to public transport!

If the government had ANY initiative, that airport link could be running by 2005, maby even sooner. But before you get carried away with such an idea, remember that our government must drag every idea through numerous stages of pointless planning and studies, taking cpo's through the court systems to ensure a lenghtly delay etc. this method ensures the least value for money for the taxpayers!
We will be lucky if we can catch a train to the airport by 2050 let alone 2005!

In fairness to Mr Brennan he is the man who kept the last government on track, acting as a kind of 'programme manager' for the coalition. I tend to believe his promises more than the average politicians. Makes a refreshing Change to Ms O'Rourke, have to say.

Well Brennan has the ideas alright, and he doesn't seem to be wasting anytime going abouts doing them so far (he has been in the headlines quite a bit lately). After the LUAS being pushed back further and further I have become a little weary of government planning, O Rourke after all made a whole load of promises from the LUAS, to a METRO to the simpler intergrated ticketing that she couldn't keep.
We desperately need this metro, or further LUAS lines, and beating around the bush like previous governments only makes it more expensive, more difficult and quite frankly pisses off everybody (and benefits nobody)
Maby his new transport agency will change a few things, we can only hope. But only time will tell

They're building the Luas at the moment aren't they or else someone is using the roads to stage World War One reconstruction.

And do you think a need for it has just arisen in the past few months? It was first proposed about a decade ago but everything was slowed down because of the way the gov does things
We needed a LUAS years ago and now we absolutely desperately need one! There should be more lines immediately proposed and construction should start as soon as possible not in 5 years! The cost of this is no object because it will repay itself ten times over, give people the option to stand on a cramped, smokey, overheated, slow, ancient bus, or an airy, smooth and fast tram and which do you think they will pick
