Anyone heard this new all-talk station in Dublin? David McWilliams who does "Agenda" on TV3 does the breakfast show and is a good interviewer (though he let Gerry McGovern and Barry O'Neill get away with murder this morning about the dot-bomb phenomenon). But some of the shows are horrible. The guy who does the late afternoon show is a Mr Hook who does rugby commentary. Loves the sound of his own voice. Damien Kiberd (former editor of the Sunday Business Post) does a lunchtime show but ain't heard it yet.

And before someone asks, it's at 106FM

Currently on is the Daire O'Brien show, talking about the return of the Red Brigades

I've listened to it on and off since the launch yesterday morning. I have to say I was very impressed with David McWilliams -- the very first interview he attempted was with a Palestinian and Israeli representative, and it went extremly civilly, without a single interruption -- a more and more rare occurance.

I wasn't that impressed with the host/show on my way home from work -- too much sports coverage and not enough of interest. Seemed to be quite a heavy emphasis on sports throughout the night as well. Think I'll stick with Eamon Dunphy for that time slot.

Up until now, I've been doing a lot of listening to BBC 5 Live and NPR on WRN, and being a new junkie, I have to say that it's great to have a local presence. (My personal models for news radio are WOR and WCBS in NYC, which I grew up with and pretty much had permanently set in my car).

I have to say that they really need to find a way to distinguish themselves from other talk shows during their time periods -- not just in personality but in format. That seems to be a problem round the board -- anyone else feel that Niall Boylan on 98FM and Adrian Kennedy on FM104 at night are basically the same show?

BTW, Have you seen a schedule of the hosts and shows anywhere? They really need an online presence!

I have only heard David McWilliams, and he has been excellent. I actually htink he is more suited to radio - he is an intelligent interviewer and commentator, but often appears less than natural on TV, a factor that can distract from his talent.

I would also be interested in hearing Damien Kiberd - bit of a raving republican, though his work in the business post has always been good, as his other radio work on Today FM.

BTW Did anyone read his piece on the Queen Mother on Sunday?

I'm a fan of George Hook when he's doing the rugby, while he might be annoying, he knows what he's talking about and isn't afraid to say what he thinks. But when I tuned in to 'The Right Hook' yesterday on 106FM, I had to go back to Dunphy after about five minutes, Hook was dreadful, he was talking about the North and it sounded like he didn't have a clue what he was talking about. It took him about four seconds to say the word 'strategy'!!
I know it was only his first day so I'm going to give him another chance this evening.

Thanks! Great article.

I suppose that's what I get for getting a foreign instead of a local newspaper today.

I can't stand either of them for more than ten seconds, so I would have to say yes...!

Nothing will ever equal Fr. Michael Cleary on 98FM, the sound of him lighting up cigarette after cigarette, and spending about half the show reading requests for the boys in the 'Joy - which were obviously pisstakes, as he'd read out about 150 made-up names!! I used to love that programme!!

(What a pity all that shite came out about him after he died :( )

Why do the media insist on giving Eoghan Harris a voice. He's a balloon. He refused to comment on the Church scandals because of it's work on decommissioning, what does one have to do with the other, does this bloke live on the same planet as the rest of us?

I'm calling him Ego Harris from now on.

Kiberd's show at lunchtime is excellent. He was the one who broke the Bobby Molloy story yesterday. Imagine, your first day on air and you bring down a Minister

There are two women in the afternoon, Sue Carter and a.n.other, and it's a bit more silly.
