scratch- starting from scratch. There was five groups let away at different times - seeded by ability and category - they let away the complete novices first, then the vets, ladies, juniors, 3rd cat, 2nd cat then the scratch group which was all 1st cat.
On Saturday, the 1st and 2nd cat started together. Not all races are run on a handicap basis - but many are, including Saturday league races and some summer evening races.
