hmm.

Rowche Rumbler
4th March 2002, 04:06 PM
is that hmm maybe - it's only a half triathlon:

750m swim. 20k cycle. 5k run.

magicbastarder
4th March 2002, 04:08 PM
hmm as in maybe.

It doesn't really play to my strengths in that I hate running, and 20k on the bike is scarcely enough to warm you up. The swim sounds cool, though - out on open water and all that.

The distances sound moderate enough for a beginner like me though. Where could I practice my swimming? I'm not a member of a gym.

40 ft in Dun Laoghaire?

I guess what I'm saying is that yep, I'd be up for it, but I'd be crap. But that's never stopped me before, so

Rowche Rumbler

i'd be crap as well. specially on the swimming and the running. And I've not got a road bike so would have to put slicks on me MTB. But fuck it, Carlingford in August. Sounds lovely.

ro, i expect you'll want to swim more than forty feet in preparation for a 750m swim.

Rowche Rumbler
4th March 2002, 05:41 PM
not if you swim it vertically 31 times :p

God yes, 20k is way to short for a bike ride. What's it it usually in triathalons, about 160km? I could do a lot of damage in the time trial, but I wouldn't have the confidence for a swim that length in the sea. And I'm a crap runner, altho if it's on grass I may be ok. I'll start considering it.

It also depends on the date - the 5-day Tour of Ireland (one of Ireland's three UCI-ranked international races) is on 27th-31st - it's a professional/amateur race, depends on whether I can get into it or not.

Still, I am interested.

Should a half a triathlon not be called a 'One-and-a-half-athalon'?

different grades for triathlon ...
http://www.cs.sfu.ca/people/GradStudents/zaiane/personal/trifaq.html#answer2

750m is only 30 odd laps of standard (well irish standard pool). to be honest i'm not in it for a result, just for something to train to. currently cycle about 20k's a week! , on a good week!

Rowche Rumbler

magicbastarder

This is now on 6th July, and apparently can be done as a relay event. I'll do the cycling bit, if anyone wants to do the running and swimming!

It's on 20km for the cycle - about 1/2 an hour. I'd probably go off and do 30km to warm up first!

6th july - eek - that's cutting it a bit fine. am doing no training till after exams (mid may). still should be okay for it.

i'm into doing the whole thing rather than the relay

Half triathlon? That sounds mad. How many events are there? One and a half?

was watching the london triathlon earlier - during the cycling, the camera bike followed the lead ladies' group and lead car down a road tunnel, and as they came out of the tunnel, i was thinking to myself "that's a very odd place to bring a televised triathlon - they were cycling through waste ground" - when the lead car stopped and it's reversing lights came on. they had taken a wrong turn, and the women's 1.5 minute lead over the chasing pack was lost, they had gone about half a mile past the turnoff they should have made, and the only way back was to retrace their steps. so to speak.

i'm trying to find out on ceefax and the bbc website what they did after the race to sort that mess out.

also, the commentators were saying the men finished the cycle stage too quick - they reckoned there may have been a mixup on that route too, but they did the 40k in 53 minutes, which is about 27mph.
