Courtesy of the Ballyhoo Examiner...

IN an historical move Ballyhoo Urban District Council has passed a unanimous
vote condemning US President Bill Clinton's "snub" of the town in his
forthcoming Irish tour.

Chairman Micky Ned O'Shea's proposal was seconded by Cllr Seanie Cregan. Cllr Mossie Culhane pointed out that this was almost definitely not the first time Clinton had bypassed the town, but now "it was beginning to tell and become a nasty habit".
Cllr Chick Murphy said a common history lesson was that larger nations eventually got
too big for their boots, that nations even as small as the Vietnamese had beaten the Americans with "little more than bows and arrows". Cllr Tim Gleeson agreed with the
motion, but was actually glad that Mr Clinton had boycotted the town for his third official visit. "Wherever he goes to in Ireland there are always horrendous traffic jams for more than a day, entire housing estates are blocked off and people are kept virtual
prisoners in their own homes. Is it any wonder that US Presidents keep on getting
assassinated?"

A few things have come to our attention over the visit of this Clinton character.

1) He was apparently greeted at the airport (I may have misheard this) by Mary (Mata) Harney and Brian Cowan. If I arrived anywhere, off a plane, off a bus, anything, and was greeted by that terrible duo, I'd return to whence I came double quick. Cowan makes me thing of the troll in the Billy Goats Gruff story.

2) There was an ENORMOUS cavalcade between The Deerpark (U.S. Ambassador's residence) and Aras an Uachtarlann (sic) - we lost count at something like 14 cars plus outriders. The two houses are withing spitting distance, you can see the gate of one from the gate of the other! Very John Prescott (British Transport Minister) and very-un green. I mean, ok, it's drizzling a bit outside, but they would have been quicker walking.

3)It's all very Tour de France 1998, when the 1st stage (i.e. not the prologue) finished outside Aras. We watched the race around wicklow on the telly, then strolled up to the park for the finish. This morning - getting a weird stereo effect from the helicopter noise being both on the telly AND outside the window. And Bill never called in, despite our bribes of almond fingers, apple tart and fig rolls.

After the Elian Gonzalez case, I don't think Bill wants any more Cubans.

Perhaps it was for the safety of the tots. After the bombing of that building in Oklahoma City (including a full day care center) perhaps nut-job-terrorists would like to make a big, newsy splash by blowing up kiddies near Clinton. That photograph of the fireman with the little tot was pretty effective, if you recall.

Uh...dunno about that one. Secret Service makes people "go away" for saying things like that.

(Does that mean Bush & Gore both go down if it's a tie?)

seems 3yo toddlers are a security risk... so everyone with children has to talke the day off work...

thats disgraceful....

I've never understood the need for such ridiculous security around public servants. In Dublin the gardaí had their little boat out on the Liffey this morning, had helicopters all over the shop, bikes and cars with sirens blaring flying up the quays, roads and the people's park closed to the public and that's only the measures I know about. For what exactly?

Let's just say someone did decide to shoot Bertie or Mary or even Bill. Admittedly Bill getting shot would be embarrassing for the country but if the others got shot, apart from the tragic loss of human life, would it really be that big a deal? Sure, they're politicians but they're people just like us. Who would want to shoot them? Would we have trouble replacing them if they were shot? Do we need this much disruption around the country just because Hillary is having the girls round for lunch while Bertie takes her man out for a pint? Politicians already have an inflated opinion of themselves as it is. To me surrounding these servants of the people with barriers and security personnel to keep the people away from them sort of defeats the whole purpose of having them.

Well you should certainly have the right to approach them in the street and ask them what exactly it is that they are playing at and why they think they can get away with lying to you to make you put your trust in them and give them your vote. Part of the reason they do it is because they know we can't hassle them when they do.

(... memories of some pissant politician asking my Dad for his vote and, while I was standing right beside him, asking my Dad if I would be voting for him as well. Not a chance pal!...)

err, highly doubtful. Slick Willy didn't get into Dundalk until 9 o'clock last night, a time when most tots are going to be in bed anyway.

Actually the closing of the creches was most probably as much for the safty of the kids as well as the pres. Bullets & Bombs don't discriminate.

I remember his last visit. To check security along his route they had 6 black USSS chinooks without markings fly in formation along the S.Armagh-Monaghan border at about 500 feet. There was uproar as some people assumed they were British chinooks.
Lucky for those stupid fucks with their black suits and shades that none of the 'ra were near any of the stingers that day.

And what were they looking for, sheep in combat dress. The secret service (and the entire US industrio-military machine) love security for securitys sake.

Apparently Clinton got out of his car and walked up Nassau Street and went into the Kilkenny Shop - unscheduled. A friend of mine was hanging out of her office window looking straight down at him....perfect asasination point!
BTW where did he stay last night?
