New Episode I DVD Specs Info
Wed, Jun 20, 01 08:25:02 AM EDT Adam Richardson has done some great sleuth work:
"If you look closely at the back cover for the TPM DVD box art (TheDigitalBits scan), you'll see that there is a featurette called "Star Wars-Starfighter--The Making of a Game" featurette from Lucasarts. I don't believe this was announced at all, perhaps a sign that not all the features have been announced. Also, there is DVD-ROM content "a weblink to exclusive Star Wars content."
I wasn't sure if you had posted this, and thought I could save a lot of people from straining their eyes ;-) Hope this helps."
Certainly does help Adam, great eye. If anyone sees additional information or has a complete transcript of the information on the back cover, please email TFN.
Update: In the paragraph above the credits, the following is clearly visible:

Wed, Jun 20, 01 12:12:23 AM EDT
Everyone is talking about the Episode I DVD, including mainstream news sites and television shows. Included on the net is a new Associated Press article with a new quote from Ward on the release of the Classic Triology on DVD:
""Star Wars'' is going DVD, finally.
George Lucas' science-fiction saga will begin its transition to DVD with the Oct. 16 release of a two-disc set for ""Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace,'' Lucasfilm Ltd. and 20th Century Fox said Tuesday.
The ""Star Wars'' films are among the most eagerly awaited films that have yet to appear on DVD. There still are no immediate plans for DVD release of the three original installments, ""Star Wars,'' ""The Empire Strikes Back'' and ""Return of the Jedi.''
""We wanted to get this first episode out,'' said Jim Ward, vice president of marketing for Lucasfilm. ""Someday, absolutely, the others will be released. We just don't know when.''
""The Phantom Menace'' DVD set will include audio commentary by Lucas, an hour-long documentary on the making of the film, and featurettes about the plot, design, costumes, visual effects and fight scenes.
And EOnline talks about the release as well, and more on the Phantom Edits at the bottom of this piece:
The great disturbance you're hearing isn't coming from your VCR.
Force freaks, get ready to add another version of director George Lucas' space opera to your already overcrowded Star Wars video shelf.
Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox on Tuesday announced the release of Star Wars: Episode I--The Phantom Menace on DVD this fall, marking the first time the Star Wars saga will be distributed on the digital format.
"Finally, it is here," the relieved Peter M. Bracke writes on his DVDfile.com, a site dedicated to the digital format. "It is hard to believe that what we've all longed for ever since we picked up our first DVD players has finally arrived."
After umpteen versions on VHS and laserdisc, Lucasfilm is going all out for its first DVD from the Star Wars saga.
"We're very excited about the added-value material," says Lucasfilm spokeswoman Lynn Hale. "We've got scenes newly created just for the DVD which were never completed for the film." Amazon Taking TPM DVD Pre-Orders

Star Wars set for DVD
release

Phantom Menace: First Star Wars on DVD
Star Wars: The Phantom Menace is to be
released on DVD in October.

The launch marks the first of the four-strong
Star Wars saga to be released on the format.

It is not known when the rest of the Star Wars
films will be released on DVD.

The Phantom Menace is the second
highest-grossing movie of all time and the
fourth in the series to be made although it
acts as a prequel to the previous trilogy.

The DVD release has
been digitally mastered
using THX technology -
a sound and picture
system designed by
Lucasfilm, the company
set up by director
George Lucas.

Special features

The DVD boasts more
than six hours of
additional material,
including exclusive
documentaries and new footage.

Other special features on the disc include the
first-ever commentary by director Lucas, a
deleted scenes documentary featuring seven
new sequences completed for the DVD, and an
hour-long documentary film culled from more
than 600 hours of behind-the-scenes footage.

The disc's sale is bound to generate intense
interest - more than five million copies of the
film on VHS were sold in the US within just 48
hours of release.

A fifth film in the series is currently in
production and is set for release next year.
